Today we will gain practice with the various types of communication which the Internet allows.

E-mail - This program enables you to send and receive messages to and from others electronically. You must configure the e-mail program on your computer with information about your (ISP) server and yourself.

Web-based E-mail address - This is a way to send and receive e-mail from any computer that can access the Internet without having to configure the owner's e-mail program. LAUSD now has webMAIL.

Telnet - This networking device enables you to dial directly to another computer and utilize the resources it offers you.

File Transfer Program (FTP**) - This program enables you to send and receive files to and from another computer. The FTP program provided by LAUSDnet is "FETCH" for MacOS users and "WS-ftp" for Windows platform.

**Note: Make sure that you have a virus protection program installed on your computer (and update it at least monthly). There is a possible hazard in receiving files from other computers. Some could contain a virus that will damage your computer. Whenever you download a file or program to your computer, always save it on a disk first. Then do a virus scan before you open it.

Gopher - There are tons of information stored in Gopher format.
