Part One

Today we are going to build a home in cyberspace following these directions:


Section One: - Setting Up Your Document

1. From the Menu bar click on "Properties-> Document -> "
A- General -> Document Title (Give your document a title such as "My Home Page")
B --> Appearance (select a color for your text and background) -> OK
2. Click on the  button on the toolbar, and save your document file on the desktop. (Save file as "yourname.htm" )

Section Two: - Creating a Table for Your Heading
1. Click on the  button on the tool bar. In the dialog box that appears, type in 2. Click on the left cell of the table; then click on the  button. Find the Clip art folder and select an image. (This image will be replaced later with one of your choosing.)
 
3. In the right cell of the table, type the title of your page. Then highlight the text, and select "Heading 1" from the drop-down paragraph menu.
4. The dark "A" makes it Bold and "A" turns it to italics.) Set it to your liking.
 
5. Click on the  icon to save your work.

Section Three: - The Body -
Write a brief paragraph or two answering the following questions:

1. What is your name?

2. Where do you work?

3. What is your specialty or field of expertise?

4. What are your special interests, hobbies, pastimes?

5. What is your purpose for creating this web page? What is your web page intended to provide or accomplish?

6. Further down the page you are to insert more specific information relating to the theme and purpose of your page.

7. Click on the  icon to save your work.

Section Four: - Learning to link.

Before we can complete this section, you will need to find some interesting sites on the Internet that relate to your responses to each of questions #'s 2 - 5 above. Once you have selected your interesting sites, be sure to record the name and URL (Internet address) of each site.
First study the example below. Then follow the directions.

Example:

I am Carolyn O. Burleson, Digital High School Coordinator at Lincoln High School. I am especially interested in discovering how the technology of the Internet will impact upon the teaching/learning process as well as upon the way we will relate to one another in the Twenty-first Century. I also work for LAUSD Instructional Technology Branch training District employees on the use of the Internet and its applications/implications for education, as well as how to integrate technology applications into the curriculum as instructional tools.

I have come to this class to teach you how to create web pages. This skill will enable you to make use of the Internet for expanding your lessons and your students' learning base. If I can be of assistance to you, feel free to drop me a line by e-mail.


Creating External Links:

1. Highlight the word(s) or image that you want to link to a site on the Internet.
2. Click on the  icon on the toolbar.  In the dialog box that appears, type in the URL of the site you want to link. The word(s) will appear in your text as blue, underlined letters (see above). This lets you and the viewer know that more information can be accessed by clicking on the hypertext.

3. Click on the  icon to save your work.

4. Click on the  icon to view your work and check your links.

Creating "Target" links. This is for linking images and text within the same page or to a particular section of another page within your own web.

1. Notice how the listings in the 'Table of Contents' are linked to the corresponding text information within this page.
2. On your own page, place your cursor at the place where you want the link to point, and click on the  button on the toolbar. When the dialog box appears, give your target a name.
 
3. Highlight the text or image that you want to link 'from.' Then click on the  button. When the dialog box appears, select from the list of named targets in the current page.
4. Save your work.

Add a "mailto" Link:
1- Highlight the word or image you want to use for your link.

2- Click on the  button.  In the dialog box, type "mailto:" and your e-mail address. Example: < mailto: carolyn@ary.net >

Section Five - Final Steps:

Once you have finished inputting your information, check all of your links.
After you have created and saved your pages,
1. Read the Helpful Hints to look for possible ways to refine your web site.

2. Make sure your pages follow LAUSDnet's Acceptable Use Policy and the Design Standards for LAUSDnet.

3. Submit your page to your school Sitemaster to be included in your school web site.
