The Process
First: How much do you know?
- The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) was appointed by the Secretary of Labor to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work. Read this excerpt from the SCANS Report and determine:
- What fundamental skills and workplace competencies do you possess?
- Which skills and competencies do you need to develop?
- Take a look at the areas of employment that may possibly be open to someone with a high school diploma.
- Then look at the skills listed across the top row. Match each skill with the job field by placing an 'X' in the proper column.
You probably know more than you think, once you give this some consideration. (See the chart.)
You become the teacher of your team. Each one select a Literacy Skill needed to function successfully in the 21st Century. Learn all about it and teach it to your team.
Next:
- Go to Occupational Outlooks to learn more about the qualifications for each job.
- Conduct a job search and find eight (8) more jobs/careers to add to this list.
- Choose the career that interests you.
- Check your State Occupational Projections to learn the prospects of these careers in your future.
- Decide what you need to know and formulate questions to ask of a potential employer.
- Make an appointment and interview a local employer or an online expert .
Then:
- Choose the Best Search Tool for 21st Century Information Literacy.
- Visit the US Department of Labor to learn about changing trends in the labor force.
- Consult the resources for articles on preparing for the 21st Century work force. Each one choose an article to read and report back to your team.
- Find the 10 Hottest Jobs of the 21st Century, and their requirements. Explain what makes these jobs are so "Hot" in our society.
Finally:
- After you have collected your information, download the brochure template and save it in your folder.
- Launch MS Publisher and prepare your brochure. The Office Assistant will help you with your brochure if you need it. Simply click on the help button.
within the MS Publisher program.
